Salts, it's been a fantastic run since you took over as gaffer.
How has the start to life been as Brightlingsea Regent manager?
RS: It has been a really enjoyable start, all credit to the players and staff to be honest. The majority of hard work was done in the summer with recruitment and you can see the squad we have built is extremely competitive and can beat anybody on our day. I have enjoyed stepping away from the coaching side of things and handing the majority of it over to Pip who has been fantastic. This has allowed me to focus on all other aspects of running a football team at this level and between the whole management team we all seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet which is so important for the players.
Obviously, you needed no introduction with the Rs. What were your thoughts when you were asked to take on the role?
RS: I was delighted, I felt ready and I accepted the offer before Terry even finished his question! The club is a great place to be with so many people involved which has made the transition as easy as it could be.
We've had some impressive results since you've taken charge and a manager of the month award to go with it. Are there any performances which stick out for you?
RS: The two stand out results are obviously Brentwood and Bury away but the two most important results for me are my very first game where anything but a win would have had people asking questions, to get off to a win was absolutely crucial for me and although we made really hard work of it we did eventually grind out the three points. The other result was the 2-0 win vs Basildon at home, we were miles off it that day and the scoreline could have been a whole lot worse. However we changed things around and once again managed to turn it around and get the much needed three points which in all of our eyes we saw as a huge result for us. I think the other important win was the 4-0 win at home to Cambridge City, in a game that saw our opponents unbeaten in 12 games and only just behind us in the league table. On top of that we had a very wounded squad with so many players missing we triumphed to a huge result which on the night was a very solid, professional and exciting performance.
We've seen some familiar faces come back to the club under your tenure. Do you feel that continuity has helped with the current form?
RS: Continuity is the main reason behind our success so far, the information never changes, the style of play and set up from us never changes and where possible the team does not change too much particularly in certain positions. I truly believe that makes everybody’s life easier, simplify things and work on them over and over again, everybody arrives on a Saturday or a Tuesday knowing what is expected of them on the day and it breeds confidence throughout the whole squad, as you have seen the amount of times the substitutes have come on and changed the game its because they all know the expectations.
Who would you say have been your influences throughout your career in getting where you are today?
RS: My biggest footballing influence was and always will be Adrian Webster, outside of family and friends he was the closest person I had in my life. He is the one that first guided me into my coaching badges and has always supported me with my football goals. We would often meet up for breakfast and talk about all things football which were the most valuable hours I have ever spent in a footballing sense. We would have formations set out on the table made up of cutlery and condiments and discuss different strengths and areas for improvement of formations and style of play. A true legend of the game and a legend of the area and I count myself very lucky to call Ade a true friend. I know he will be looking down on the job I am doing with great pride.
The performances on the pitch haven't gone unnoticed with the Regent faithful as loud as ever both at home and away. How important has that been to yourself and the players?
RS: Every club we come up against always applaud our fans, they are by far the best fans in the league and we've seen the group increasing every week and noise getting louder every week, it is so good to see and it really does push the players on. We love celebrating with the fans at the end of the game, win, lose or draw. Some fans Saturday accused us of celebrating as if we had won the league which is a shame. We celebrate with our fans because we know how much it means to them and we want to repay their efforts with a handshake and a thank you at full time.
If you could pick one Regent player from the past to come into your side, who would it be?
RS: So many amazing players to choose from and with the squad we are blessed with this season it makes that answer even more difficult. I think Aaron Condon would be a great addition to this team and would fit into our system perfectly. Aaron was so much more than a tap in merchant but having Azza alongside our current strikers would be unstoppable. His eye for goal and experience would be invaluable and on top of that the love he had for the club and the love the club has for him would be amazing for all involved. His character in and around our young, developing squad.
Finally, what's your all time favourite moment with your long-standing history with the Rs?
RS: By far my favourite moment was winning the Isthmian North. It was a great season with a great group of players and it is a memory I will never forget.
